Embossing
What is Foilstamping?
Foilstamping starts with a copper die that has been acid-etched with artwork. The die is then mounted in the press and heated. Then, a thin layer of foil is run over the die. Finally, the sheet to be stamped is pressed with the layer of foil between the job and the die. The combination of heat and pressure results in the foil transferring to the sheet.
Why Foil?
Foil is great for adding "pop" to a piece. It can be elegant and subtle, or exciting and attention-grabbing.
We carry a variety of colors and finishes: from bright metallics to luscious pigments, and even clear or pearlescent finishes as well!
What is Embossing?
Embossing is the process of raising up artwork on a sheet. It provides a great sense of feel to the final piece. Embossing is accomplished by pressing the sheet between a die and a counter. The die has a mirror image of the art etched into it, while the counter has a straight image of the art raised up on it. The sheet is then pressed between these two pieces. Embossing can be used to raise ink, or it can be done on its own, which is known as a "blind" emboss.
Embossing vs. Debossing
Embossing is the process of raising an image up off of the sheet. Debossing is the opposite: pushing the image down. While embossing is great for many applications, we've found that debossing is better for more intricate artwork.
